          Sugar Gliders

For Christmas of 1999, my husband got me a pair of sugar gliders. These are cute little Australian marsupials, about the size of a chipmunk, with a gliding membrane which apparently allows them to glide up to 150 feet. Mine have never had the opportunity to go such distances, but they do love to leap back and forth between Calvin and I. They are completely fearless, chasing the cats around the house and climbing all over the German Shepard. Often, I will put them into a fanny pack and take them to work with me; since they sleep during the day they make great pocket pets.

In my experience, I wouldn't recommend them as pets to anyone who

has children, especially little ones (they leap on faces and scratch)
is timid about being jumped on by small, quick-moving animals
doesn't have at least fifteen minutes a day to spend with them (if you don't spend time with them they can go feral)
is finicky about housekeeping (they defecate and urinate wherever they want)

          Mice

I raise satin mice in my garage. Okay, so it's a little wierd, but everybody's got a weird hobby or two, right? Satin mice are mice (of all colors) that have a gene which gives their coats an extra shine to them. It's very pretty, which is why I raise them. I've got silver and steel colored mice, as well as whites, spotted mice and mice with siamese color patterns (dark nose & tail & paws)

          Snakes, reptiles, amphibians

In general, reptiles (snakes, turtles, lizards) and amphibians (salamanders, newts, frogs) are grouped together under the term "herps" (from herpetology).

          Insects and other creepy crawlies

Several years ago I discovered a fascinating insect called the Australian Walking Stick. These are HUGE bugs, with tails uncurled the females can measure longer than my hand. They have the heads and forelimbs of preying mantises, and curled scorpion-like tails. Quarter-inch thorns stud the bodies of the females. The males have straight bodies, and can fly. They are absolutely guaranteed to give insect-phobics heart attacks, but they are quite harmless and placid and eat only thorny plants like blackberries and roses. Unfortunately, they live only a year and it's hit and miss trying to find them in pet shops each year. There are places on the web to order them, but the heck if I'm going to pay $30 for a bug I can usually get for $3 in a local pet shop.
